VGM Service
The VGM service is related to the “one stop” weighing of containers certified according to the current VGM SOLAS regulations.
THE LEGISLATION
In November 2014, the International Maritime Organization adopted an amendment to the Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) concerning the mandatory verification of the weight of the container and this amendment applies to all Member States that will adopt it in turn in its national legislation. From 1 July 2016, shippers will have to provide the verified Gross Mass (VGM) of each shipment to the shipping carrier and terminal operator. The SOLAS rules state that if a sender fails to provide a VGM to the maritime carrier and the terminal operator, the container cannot be loaded on board the vessel. In this case, the User is responsible for any additional charges. The shippers may authorize a third party to provide the VGM, however, the shippers remain responsible for the process.
The purpose of the VGM Service is to obtain the precise gross weight of the containers and is calculated as follows:
2 Tare of the vehicle;
4 Container repositioning.
